Modern Languages (German and Russian) and International Relations

German and Russian are two of Europe's most significant languages, each carrying a vast literary, philosophical, and political heritage. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and is central to understanding the intellectual traditions that shaped modern Europe, from Kant and Goethe to contemporary debates about European identity and democracy. Russian is the native language of over 150 million people and opens access to one of the world's great literary traditions, as well as to an important and often misunderstood political world.

Combining both with international relations adds a rigorous analytical framework for understanding how states interact, giving you not just language skills but the political and historical depth to use them meaningfully.

At the University of St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your proficiency in German and Russian to a high level while also providing a serious grounding in international relations theory and practice. You will be able to choose from a wide range of course options reflecting the rich cultural, historical, and political dimensions of the German-speaking world and Russia. The degree includes a year abroad, which is essential for language learning at this level and gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in one or both language communities.

You will graduate with a combination of skills that is genuinely unusual and highly valued: deep language competence, cultural and historical knowledge of two major world regions, and the analytical tools of international relations.

Graduates go on to work in diplomacy, the foreign service, international organisations, journalism, intelligence and security, translation, academia, and international business. Postgraduate study in international relations, area studies, translation, or security studies is also a common path.
