Combining French, German, and English literature in a single degree is an invitation to think across languages and cultures at the same time, tracing connections and contrasts between three of the most significant literary and intellectual traditions in Europe. French and German are languages with vast literary and cultural legacies, from Racine to Flaubert to Sartre in French, from Goethe to Kafka to Brecht in German, and from Shakespeare to Woolf to contemporary British writing in English. Studying all three together sharpens your capacity for close reading, cultural analysis, and cross-cultural comparison in ways that no single-language degree can match.

At St Andrews you will develop your French and German language skills to a high level of proficiency, working in contemporary and literary registers across all four skills. You will engage with Francophone and German-speaking literature, culture, history, and cinema alongside the breadth of the English literary tradition, from its medieval foundations to contemporary writing. The four-year programme culminates in a year abroad, which allows you to spend extended time in France or a Francophone country and in Germany or the German-speaking world, immersing yourself in the languages you have been studying and developing a cultural fluency that goes well beyond the classroom.
