About this course

Modern languages and philosophy is a pairing that rewards intellectual curiosity on two fronts. Learning a language to degree level means engaging not just with grammar and vocabulary but with the literatures, histories, and thought-worlds that the language carries. Philosophy, meanwhile, trains you to examine the foundations of knowledge, ethics, political life, and meaning with rigour and precision.

Together, the two disciplines develop a mind that is both culturally informed and analytically sharp, capable of moving between close linguistic interpretation and abstract argument.

At the University of Leeds you will study your chosen modern language or languages alongside a broad philosophical curriculum. In philosophy you will build skills in argument construction, engage with moral and political philosophy, trace the history of modern thought, and investigate the nature of knowledge and reality. Applied areas such as bioethics, the philosophy of race and gender, and the ethics of war and terrorism extend your analytical tools to questions with direct contemporary relevance.

In your languages study you will develop reading, writing, and spoken fluency alongside literary and cultural analysis. The four-year programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you structured professional experience that complements your academic learning.

This combination opens careers in which cross-cultural communication and careful reasoning matter. Graduates work in international business, the civil service, diplomacy, law, journalism, publishing, education, and international development. The philosophical training is particularly valued in roles requiring policy analysis, ethical judgement, or the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, applied ethics, linguistics, law, European studies, or translation, deepening their expertise for research or professional careers.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if yo…
