Modern languages and film is a combination that opens two distinct windows onto how human beings make meaning: languages give you direct access to the cultures, literatures and intellectual lives of the communities that speak them, while film studies examines how moving images, sound and narrative combine to create one of the most powerful and widely shared forms of cultural expression. Together they develop your ability to engage with culture across both textual and visual forms, in multiple languages and from multiple critical perspectives.

At Bangor University this four-year programme includes a foundation year option, providing an entry route for students who need additional preparation before entering the main degree curriculum. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience alongside your academic study. You will develop your chosen language or languages to a high level, reading and studying literary and cultural texts in the original while also building your speaking and writing skills.

Your film studies will take you through film theory, history and critical analysis, examining how cinema works as an art form and as a cultural and commercial industry across different national traditions.

Graduates of modern languages and film bring a distinctive combination of linguistic competence and cultural and critical literacy to the labour market. Careers include translation and interpreting, film criticism and journalism, arts administration and programming, cultural policy, broadcasting, publishing, education, and the many roles in the film and media industries where knowledge of non-English language cinema is an asset. The ability to engage critically with visual culture in multiple languages is valued in international film distribution, festival programming, subtitling and dubbing, documentary research, and cross-cultural media production.
