Modern history and sustainable development is a combination that brings historical analytical rigour to one of the most urgent challenges facing the contemporary world. At St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) develops your historical analytical skills alongside the conceptual and policy frameworks of sustainable development, drawing on a range of optional classes with broad chronological, geographical, and thematic coverage. You will learn to analyse historical events from the past 500 years in a present-day context, understanding how contemporary environmental and developmental challenges have deep historical roots. The sustainable development component will develop your understanding of ecology, economics, governance, and the politics of sustainability, connecting the analytical habits of history to the practical demands of addressing real-world problems.
