MNurs Learning Disability and Mental Health

Nursing for people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions requires a particular combination of clinical skill, ethical awareness and sustained human empathy. These two fields of nursing overlap significantly: people with learning disabilities often experience mental health difficulties, and effective care depends on understanding both dimensions at once. The MNurs Learning Disability and Mental Health at the University of Chester is a four-year integrated master's programme that prepares you to work with people whose needs are frequently complex, whose voices are often marginalised, and whose care requires careful coordination across health and social services.

Throughout the programme you will study the theoretical and legal frameworks that govern both fields, including legislation around capacity, consent and safeguarding. You will develop skills in therapeutic communication, risk assessment, de-escalation, positive behaviour support and evidence-based mental health interventions. The master's level curriculum means you will also engage critically with research and policy, developing the ability to evaluate evidence, challenge assumptions and contribute to service improvement.

Practice placements run throughout all four years, giving you sustained exposure to real clinical environments where you learn to work as part of multi-disciplinary teams.

Studying both fields together rather than separately gives you a distinctive perspective that is increasingly valued in health and social care settings. You will graduate with dual registration as a learning disability nurse and a mental health nurse, opening a range of specialist roles. Graduates work in NHS trusts, community mental health teams, residential care, forensic settings, specialist schools and voluntary organisations.

Many move into leadership, practice development or clinical specialist posts. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in areas such as advanced clinical practice, psychotherapy or health services research.
