Midwifery

Midwifery is the healthcare profession centred on supporting women and birthing people through pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. Midwives are autonomous practitioners who provide care across the full continuum of normal childbirth, recognising complications and coordinating with medical colleagues when situations require it. It is a profession that demands both deep scientific knowledge and highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and that carries significant responsibility for the wellbeing of both mother and baby at one of the most significant moments of their lives.

At the University of Chester, this three-year full-time Midwifery degree is designed around an equal balance of theory and practice placement experience, with fifty per cent of the programme spent in theoretical and simulated learning and fifty per cent in clinical placements. The programme makes use of a state-of-the-art simulation suite with high-fidelity, computer-assisted simulation mannequins, which allows you to practise universal, additional care, and emergency scenarios in a safe environment before encountering them in practice. This combination of simulated and real clinical experience is central to developing the competence and confidence that midwifery practice requires.

The entry tariff is 136 points.

Completion of an approved midwifery programme leads to eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and practise as a qualified midwife. Career destinations span NHS maternity services in hospital and community settings, independent midwifery practice, and roles in international midwifery and global maternal health. The profession offers significant scope for career development into specialist roles such as consultant midwife, infant feeding specialist, maternal medicine practitioner, and research and education.

Postgraduate qualifications in advanced midwifery practice, public health, or clinical leadership are available for those who wish to develop further expertise.
