Middle Eastern studies is an interdisciplinary field that brings together the study of languages, history, politics, religion, literature, and culture of one of the world's most complex, contested, and historically significant regions. From the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt through the spread of Islam, the Ottoman Empire, European colonialism, and the formation of modern nation states, the Middle East has shaped and been shaped by global history in ways that continue to define contemporary international relations, religious life, and cultural production. Understanding this region requires both linguistic access and deep contextual knowledge.

You will engage with the history, politics, society, and cultures of the region from a range of disciplinary perspectives, developing expertise that goes beyond the simplifications that often characterise public discourse about the Middle East. Language study is typically a central component, with options that may include Arabic, Persian, Turkish, or Hebrew, building direct access to primary sources and contemporary society.
