About this course

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, the bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protozoa that constitute the most abundant and diverse life forms on Earth. These organisms are invisible to the naked eye but play roles of extraordinary importance in every ecosystem, from the soil bacteria that drive nutrient cycling to the gut microbiome that influences human health to the pathogens that cause infectious disease. Understanding them is fundamental to medicine, agriculture, environmental science, biotechnology, and food production.

At Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, this three-year full-time programme focuses study on all types of microorganisms, helping you acquire both the theoretical knowledge and the practical laboratory skills needed for a career in microbiology.
