About this course

Mental health nursing is concerned with supporting people experiencing some of the most challenging conditions a person can face, from depression and anxiety to psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders, addiction and dementia. It requires a distinctive combination of clinical knowledge, relational skill and ethical sensitivity, and it is a profession in which the quality of the human relationship between nurse and patient is itself a therapeutic instrument. Mental health nursing is practised in hospitals, community settings, crisis teams, secure units, prisons, and a growing range of voluntary and independent sector organisations.

At Wrexham University this three-year full-time programme leads to registration as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will study the biological, psychological and social dimensions of mental health and illness, developing your understanding of the conditions you will encounter and the evidence base for the interventions used to treat them. Clinical placements are a central part of the programme, placing you in real mental health settings under supervision from qualified nurses and other practitioners.

You will develop skills in therapeutic communication, risk assessment, care planning, medicines management, and the collaborative, person-centred practice that defines contemporary mental health nursing.

Registered Mental Health Nurses work in a wide range of settings, including NHS inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis resolution and home treatment services, early intervention in psychosis services, CAMHS, older adult services, forensic settings, and private and charitable organisations. The NMC registration you gain provides a licence to practise across the United Kingdom and opens pathways to work internationally. Many mental health nurses go on to postgraduate study in areas such as cognitive behavioural therapy, systemic practice, nurse prescribing, or leadership, developing specialist clinical expertise or moving into management, education or research.

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: anatomy teaching here is particularly strong β€” full dissection experience. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local co…

A great decision
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if y…
