Mental Health Nursing
Mental Health Nursing is a profession dedicated to supporting people experiencing mental illness and psychological distress, at some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments of their lives. Mental health nurses work across a wide range of settings, from acute inpatient wards and crisis services to community teams, prisons, and specialist clinics, using therapeutic relationships, evidence-based interventions, and compassionate care to promote recovery and wellbeing. The role requires a deep understanding of the biological, psychological, and social factors that shape mental health, as well as the interpersonal skills to build trust with people in crisis.
At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on how mental health care is delivered and organised in different systems. The degree develops your clinical knowledge and practical expertise through a combination of academic study and supervised practice experience, preparing you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse. You will explore the causes and presentations of mental health conditions, the legislative frameworks governing mental health care, therapeutic approaches and their evidence base, and the skills of assessment and care planning.
Person-centred care and the promotion of recovery are central values throughout. The part-time structure makes the programme accessible to those who are already working in health or care settings and wish to qualify alongside their employment.
Graduates of Mental Health Nursing register with the NMC and work in NHS and independent sector mental health services, community teams, primary care, schools, prisons, and voluntary organisations.
