Mental Health Nursing
Mental health nursing is one of the most vital and demanding healthcare professions, working with people experiencing a wide range of psychological conditions, from anxiety, depression and eating disorders to psychosis, personality disorders and substance misuse. Mental health nurses provide care and support across acute inpatient settings, community mental health teams, crisis services, forensic units and specialist outpatient services, and they do so in ways that balance clinical assessment and risk management with therapeutic relationships and genuine human compassion.
At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible entry route for students who do not yet have the academic qualifications required for direct entry to degree-level study but who have the commitment and potential to succeed. Once the foundation year is completed successfully, you progress into the nursing degree, which is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and leads to professional registration on completion. The programme also includes a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on mental health nursing and care.
You will develop the clinical knowledge, practical skills and professional judgement needed to assess, plan and deliver care across a range of mental health settings, building both the technical competence and the therapeutic presence that effective mental health nursing requires.
Registration as a mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council opens a wide range of career pathways across the NHS, independent sector providers, voluntary organisations and community services. Many nurses go on to specialise in areas such as forensic mental health, child and adolescent mental health, substance misuse or eating disorders. Leadership, management, clinical education and advanced practice are established routes for experienced mental health nurses, and the profession offers a deeply meaningful career in consistent and growing demand.
