About this course

Medieval history and Bible and culture is a combination that allows you to engage with two of the most formative dimensions of European civilisation: the political, social, and cultural life of the medieval world, and the biblical texts and traditions that shaped so much of medieval thought, art, law, and daily experience. Medieval history invites close engagement with the documents, chronicles, and material evidence of a period stretching from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance, a world simultaneously remote and recognisable in its preoccupations. Bible and culture examines the Bible not only as religious text but as a cultural force that has generated literature, art, theology, and social norms across many centuries.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme allows you to develop expertise in both areas at an institution with a rich tradition of medieval and theological scholarship. You will develop skills in historical research from primary sources, including the ability to work with Latin and other medieval languages, alongside engagement with biblical texts and their reception across history and culture. A year abroad is part of the programme, placing you in a different academic and cultural setting that may include access to archives, manuscripts, or institutions significant for medieval or biblical studies.

Graduates pursue careers in heritage management, archives, museums and galleries, academic research, religious organisations, journalism, publishing, and the civil service. The combination of historical research skills, cultural depth, and textual analysis is valued in any role requiring the careful interpretation of complex material. Postgraduate study in medieval history, religious studies, theology, and archival science is a natural progression, and St Andrews's strong research culture provides an excellent foundation for academic careers.

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” …
