Medicine is the discipline concerned with understanding, diagnosing, and treating human disease and injury, and with promoting the health of individuals and populations. Medicine is one of the most directly vocational degrees available, leading to qualification as a doctor and to work in one of the most respected and socially important professions. Graduates undertake a period of foundation training before progressing to specialty training in their chosen area, which may be in any branch of medicine or surgery, general practice, public health, or a range of other specialties. A small number of graduates pursue academic medicine, combining clinical practice with research.
