About this course

Medicine is one of the most demanding and socially significant of all professions, asking its practitioners to combine scientific knowledge with clinical skill, ethical judgement, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure. The graduate entry pathway is designed for people who already hold a degree in a relevant subject, typically biomedical sciences, and who wish to train as a doctor through an accelerated route that draws on their prior academic formation. It requires high levels of intellectual ability, personal resilience, and genuine commitment to patient care.

Cardiff University's five-year full-time Medicine (Graduate Entry) programme leads to the primary medical qualification needed to practise as a doctor in the UK. The programme combines clinical training with scientific understanding, ensuring that graduates understand not only what to do in clinical situations but why: the underlying physiology, pharmacology, and pathology that make interventions effective. Clinical placements across hospitals and community settings in Wales expose you to the full range of medical specialties, giving you the breadth of experience needed to make informed choices about your future career and to demonstrate competence across the clinical domains assessed at qualification.

The graduate entry format assumes and builds on your prior degree, and you will be expected to bring intellectual maturity and strong independent learning habits to the programme from the outset.

A typical tariff of 184 points in combination with a relevant prior degree is required, and selection processes include assessment of academic performance, clinical insight, and personal qualities. The five-year duration reflects the depth of learning required to reach safe and competent independent practice.

Graduates complete the foundation programme and proceed to speciality training, with careers available across every branch of medicine from general practice to acute surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics, oncology, and many others. Medicine also opens routes into medical research, education, public health, and health policy and management.
