About this course

Medicinal chemistry and pharmacology share a common goal: understanding how chemical substances interact with living systems to produce therapeutic effects. Medicinal chemistry approaches this from the perspective of molecular design, asking how the structure of a drug molecule determines its activity, selectivity, and safety. Pharmacology looks at the effects of those molecules on the body, investigating the mechanisms by which drugs alter physiological processes and produce clinical outcomes.

Together, these disciplines form the scientific foundation of the pharmaceutical industry and of modern drug discovery.

At Liverpool you will build a broad and detailed understanding of both fields across four years of full-time study. The programme covers organic and medicinal chemistry, drug design and synthesis, biochemistry, molecular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, and the science of how drugs are absorbed, distributed, and eliminated by the body. You will develop practical laboratory skills alongside the theoretical knowledge, and the four-year structure provides the depth needed to reach an advanced level in both disciplines.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a university or research institution overseas and broaden your scientific and personal horizons.

Graduates are well placed to move into the pharmaceutical industry in roles spanning drug discovery, analytical chemistry, clinical research, and regulatory affairs. The programme also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate research degrees in either chemistry or pharmacology, an important pathway for those drawn to academic or industrial research careers. Other destinations include clinical development, patent law, healthcare management, and scientific communication.
