About this course

Medicinal chemistry is the science of designing and synthesising molecules with therapeutic activity, sitting at the precise intersection of chemistry and biology where drug discovery happens. It draws on organic chemistry, structural biology, pharmacology, and biochemistry to understand how the three-dimensional shape and chemical properties of molecules determine how they bind to biological targets such as enzymes, receptors, and ion channels, and how those interactions produce therapeutic or toxic effects in living systems. The great advances in medicine over the past century, from antibiotics and analgesics to targeted cancer therapies and antiviral agents, have depended fundamentally on the expertise of medicinal chemists.
