Medical Ultrasound

Medical ultrasound, or sonography, is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body structures. It is one of the most widely used imaging modalities in modern healthcare, applied across obstetrics, gynaecology, cardiac imaging, vascular assessment, and musculoskeletal examination, among other specialisms. At the University of Leeds, the BSc Medical Ultrasound (Sonography) is a three-year full-time programme taught by academics with extensive experience in ultrasound education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, combining scientific and clinical knowledge with the practical scanning skills that professional sonography requires.

The programme develops your understanding of the physics of ultrasound and how imaging equipment works, alongside the anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to the clinical areas in which ultrasound is used. You will learn to operate ultrasound equipment competently and to produce diagnostic-quality images, to interpret those images in clinical context, and to communicate your findings effectively to the clinical team. Patient communication and safety are integral to the training, as sonography is a patient-facing clinical role.

Clinical placements are a central component of the degree, giving you hands-on experience in real healthcare environments where you develop your scanning skills under the supervision of registered practitioners. The technical demands of the role require sustained precision and the ability to develop pattern recognition through practice.

Sonographers work across the NHS and private healthcare, primarily in radiology and imaging departments, maternity units, cardiac services, and vascular laboratories. Demand for trained sonographers in the NHS is strong and consistent, and the specialisation commands competitive salaries relative to many allied health professions. Completion of an approved programme and clinical training provides the basis for registration with the appropriate professional body.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study to extend their practice into additional areas of ultrasound or to develop specialist expertise in cardiac, vascular, or obstetric sonography. The combination of clinical skill, anatomical knowledge, and technical expertise that the Leeds programme develops provides a strong foundation for a rewarding career in medical imaging.
