About this course

Medical Neuroscience is concerned with understanding the brain and nervous system, both in their normal functioning and in the context of disease. It sits at the intersection of medicine, biology, and neuroscience, drawing on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and psychology to explain how neural circuits generate behaviour, how neurological and psychiatric conditions arise, and how emerging treatments might address them. As the complexity of the brain becomes clearer through advances in imaging, genetics, and molecular biology, medical neuroscience has become one of the most dynamic and consequential fields in modern science.

At the University of Sussex, this full-time programme runs over three years and includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will study the structure and function of the human brain and nervous system in depth, exploring topics that range from the cellular mechanisms of neurons to the systems involved in perception, memory, emotion, and decision-making. The programme gives you a grounding in neurological and psychiatric disorders, including how they are understood and treated, and trains you in the experimental methods used to investigate the nervous system.

Hands-on laboratory sessions develop your technical skills, while training in computing, programming, and data analysis prepares you for the quantitative demands of modern neuroscience research. The year abroad and sandwich year extend your experience into international and professional contexts.

Graduates of Medical Neuroscience move into a wide range of careers.
