About this course

Medical engineering, sometimes called biomedical engineering, applies the principles and methods of engineering to problems in medicine and healthcare. It draws on mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering alongside biology and physiology to design and develop devices, systems, and technologies that diagnose, treat, or monitor medical conditions. From diagnostic imaging equipment and surgical robots to prosthetics and biosensors, the field produces innovations that directly affect patient care and clinical outcomes.

At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you to work at this intersection of engineering and medicine. You will develop as a competent classical engineer first, building solid foundations in engineering principles before applying them to medical contexts.
