About this course

Medical biosciences with genetics is a discipline that sits at the cutting edge of our understanding of human disease, heredity, and the biological mechanisms that underpin health and illness. Genetics in a medical context is not simply about the inheritance of traits: it is about understanding how variations in the genome contribute to the risk of disease, how those variations can be detected, and how that knowledge can lead to more precise, personalised approaches to diagnosis and treatment. These questions are reshaping medicine, and the scientists and clinicians who can address them are increasingly sought after.

At the University of Leicester, this four-year MBiolSci programme builds on a specialised BSc foundation and extends it into a fourth year of master's level study, honing your research and laboratory skills to the level required for advanced work in medical genetics and biomedical science. You will study genetics and genomic mechanisms in the context of complex disease in human populations, developing expertise in molecular and cellular biology, genetic analysis, and the biomedical research methods that translate laboratory findings into clinical relevance. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placements, all of which add professional experience and international dimension to an already demanding and rewarding course.

The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates of medical biosciences with genetics programmes find careers in clinical genetics, genomic medicine, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, genetic counselling, and public health genomics. The MBiolSci qualification positions graduates for doctoral research or for roles in academic and industrial research settings where a master's level understanding of genetics and biomedical science is required. NHS genomics services, university research departments, and the life sciences industry all represent significant employment sectors for graduates with this training.

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: OSCEs are tough but you leave competent. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other UK citi…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship one…
