About this course

Medical biochemistry occupies a particularly important position within the life sciences, applying the principles of biochemistry directly to the understanding of human disease. Many of the most significant advances in medicine over the past century have come from understanding what happens at the molecular level when the body's processes go wrong: how a mutated protein causes cancer, how a pathogen subverts cellular machinery, or how a drug molecule binds to its target. Medical biochemistry is the discipline that makes those connections explicit, sitting at the interface between fundamental science and clinical medicine.

At the University of Leicester, you will study the molecular processes that underlie normal physiological function alongside the mechanisms of disease, developing a detailed understanding of how the body works at the level of genes, proteins, and metabolic pathways. You will develop strong laboratory skills alongside the quantitative and analytical capacities that biochemical research demands, learning to design experiments, interpret data, and engage critically with the scientific literature. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to undertake a professional placement in a research or industrial setting before your final year, as well as a year abroad at a partner institution.

Work placement provision is built in, and the combination of professional experience and international exposure gives you significant advantages on the graduate job market. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates from medical biochemistry programmes go on to work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical and medical laboratory science, science communication, and regulatory affairs. Many use the degree as a stepping stone to graduate-entry medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy, and the strong scientific foundation is well regarded by admissions tutors. Postgraduate study at MSc or PhD level in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, or related disciplines is also a common path for those wanting to pursue a research career.
