About this course

Medieval History and Theological Studies is a pairing that goes to the heart of European and Middle Eastern civilisation as it actually existed across more than a thousand years. The Middle Ages were a period in which religious thought and theological controversy shaped every dimension of life, from political authority and legal systems to art, philosophy, and everyday practice. Understanding that period properly requires engaging with both its history and its theology, and the two disciplines illuminate each other in ways that studying either alone cannot match.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time MA programme teaches you to engage with sophisticated modes of thought and expression across medieval Europe and the Middle East. You will work with primary sources in their original languages and contexts, developing the skills to analyse complex historical arguments, interpret theological texts, and understand the intellectual and cultural world in which they were produced. You will encounter the great theological debates that animated the medieval world, study the religious institutions and movements that shaped society, and examine how medieval history provides the background that continues to underlie contemporary events and identities.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to bring a comparative perspective to your engagement with the medieval world.

The analytical and interpretive skills that medieval history and theological studies develop are valued in a wide range of careers. Graduates go on to work in education, heritage, museums, archiving, publishing, journalism, the church, the voluntary sector, and the civil service. Many continue to postgraduate study in medieval history, theology, religious studies, or classics, and some pursue research careers that contribute to ongoing scholarly understanding of a period that continues to fascinate and to matter.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant studen…

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if…
