Medieval history and Russian is a combination that brings together two vast and rich intellectual territories. Medieval history encompasses the period from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the early modern era, covering Europe, the Middle East, and the complex interactions between civilisations across more than a thousand years. It requires engagement with sophisticated modes of thought and expression, with primary sources in Latin, Old French, Arabic, and other languages, and with the historical backgrounds that continue to shape the present in ways that are not always visible.

Russian adds a living language of immense literary and cultural depth, opening access to a tradition from Pushkin and Dostoevsky to contemporary Russian literature and to one of the most important geopolitical situations in the modern world.

At St Andrews, this four-year programme develops both disciplines to honours level, giving you a serious engagement with medieval European and Middle Eastern history alongside high-level Russian language proficiency and cultural knowledge. You will develop skills in archival and source analysis, historiographical critique, and the construction of well-evidenced historical argument, while also building your Russian reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities and engaging with the literature, history, and politics of the Russian-speaking world. A year abroad is built in, which is essential for the Russian strand and provides the opportunity to study in a different academic context.

Graduates from this distinctive combination find careers in academia, heritage, journalism, diplomacy, intelligence analysis, translation, and international organisations concerned with Eastern European and Russian affairs.
