Media and Creative Writing

Media and creative writing is a degree that trains you both to analyse the media world and to contribute to it as a practitioner. Media studies examines the institutions, technologies, and cultural forms through which information, entertainment, and communication reach audiences, asking how content is produced, who owns and controls the media landscape, and what impact media have on individuals and societies. Creative writing develops the craft of making literary work in fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and screenwriting, cultivating a distinctive voice alongside technical skill.

Together, the two disciplines equip you to engage with contemporary communication as both a critical thinker and a creative practitioner.

At Aberystwyth University, this full-time, three-year BA allows you to learn the strategic and structural components of the media industry while also developing your creative writing skills in a rigorous way. You will examine how media organisations operate, how content reaches audiences, and how digital technologies are reshaping the relationship between producers and consumers. The creative writing element allows you to focus on the craft of writing across forms including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and screenplays, developing your ability to produce compelling work and to receive and act on critical feedback.

The combination builds both the analytical and creative capacities needed for a career in the contemporary media and creative landscape. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.

Graduates from media and creative writing programmes move into careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital content creation, publishing, copywriting, screenwriting, advertising, public relations, and arts administration. The critical media skills are also valued in marketing, communications, and the public sector. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine creative writing practice with work in media organisations.
