About this course

Mechatronics and robotics engineering is the discipline that brings together mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science and control systems to design and build intelligent machines. Robots, automated manufacturing systems, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, drones and the rapidly growing family of smart systems that are transforming industry all rely on the integration of these four disciplines, and mechatronics engineers are the people who understand how to make that integration work. It is a field at the frontier of engineering practice, where the boundaries between hardware and software, physical and digital systems are dissolving.

This three-year full-time degree at Middlesex University includes a foundation year and a sandwich year with a work placement. The foundation year provides the mathematical, scientific and engineering foundations needed before you progress to degree-level work, making the programme accessible to students who want a structured entry into engineering. The placement year gives you professional experience in industry, applying your learning to real engineering challenges before you graduate.

Throughout the programme you will develop expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and digital systems through practice-based learning, building the technical and problem-solving skills needed for a career in the rapidly evolving technology sector.

Graduates work across the manufacturing, automation, aerospace, defence, healthcare technology, automotive and logistics sectors, as well as in specialist robotics companies and research organisations. Roles in robotics engineering, automation design, systems integration, software development for embedded systems and technical consultancy are all relevant destinations. The growing demand for engineers who can design and deploy intelligent automated systems makes this a field with strong employment prospects.

Further study at postgraduate level in robotics, control systems or artificial intelligence is an option for those wishing to develop specialist expertise or pursue research.
