About this course

Mechatronics and robotic systems is the integration of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, control systems and computer science to design intelligent machines. It is the discipline behind the robots, automated manufacturing systems, autonomous vehicles, medical devices and smart infrastructure that are transforming industries across the world. Mechatronics engineers must understand how mechanical systems move and carry loads, how sensors and actuators interface with electronics, how software controls physical processes, and how all these elements are integrated into coherent, reliable systems.

At Liverpool, this four-year programme includes a year in industry, giving you the opportunity to work within a company, research organisation or engineering firm that designs, builds or uses robotic or mechatronic systems. This professional experience develops your practical engineering judgment alongside your academic knowledge and significantly strengthens your employability. You will study mechanical and structural analysis, electronic systems, control theory, programming, sensors and actuation, computer vision, machine learning for robotics, and the systems engineering methodologies through which complex integrated systems are designed and validated.

The year in industry allows you to apply this knowledge in a real engineering environment.

Mechatronics and robotics graduates move into careers in advanced manufacturing, automotive and aerospace engineering, medical device development, defence systems, logistics automation, agricultural robotics, research and development, and the rapidly growing field of service robotics. The combination of mechanical, electrical and software skills is particularly valued in sectors undergoing automation and in companies developing next-generation robotic systems. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate research in robotics, autonomous systems, control engineering or artificial intelligence for physical systems.
