About this course

Mechatronic engineering is the discipline that brings mechanical engineering together with electronics, computing and control systems to design intelligent machines and automated systems. Where a purely mechanical engineer might design a structure or machine to move and function, a mechatronics engineer designs systems that can sense their environment, process information, and respond adaptively. Robots, autonomous vehicles, smart manufacturing systems, medical devices and consumer electronics all depend on this kind of integrated design thinking.

The discipline is central to the automation and digital transformation of industry, and the demand for engineers who can work across the traditional boundaries between mechanics and electronics is growing rapidly.

At the University of Manchester you will follow a four-year programme that includes a foundation year, providing a preparation stage for students who need to build the mathematical and scientific foundations before progressing into the full engineering curriculum. Manchester has a prestigious engineering history and a strong focus on research and industrial connection, and the mechatronics programme reflects that, giving you grounding in mechanical principles alongside electronics, signals, control theory, programming and embedded systems. You will develop both the analytical skills needed to model and design complex integrated systems and the practical skills needed to build and test them.

Robotics and automation, aerospace, automotive engineering, medical device design, consumer electronics, defence, renewable energy systems and advanced manufacturing are all significant employers. Roles include design engineer, systems engineer, control engineer, robotics engineer, product development engineer, and technical consultant.

Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the IMechE or IET. Postgraduate study in robotics, control systems, advanced manufacturing or related fields is an option for those who wish to specialise further or pursue research careers.
