About this course

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that designs, analyses, and builds the machines, systems, and structures that do work in the physical world. It encompasses thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, structural analysis, dynamics, and the design and manufacturing processes that bring concepts into reality. Subsea technology focuses this expertise on one of the most technically demanding environments on earth: the deep ocean, where offshore energy infrastructure, pipelines, ROVs, and subsea production systems must operate reliably under immense pressure, in corrosive conditions, and far from any possibility of easy maintenance or repair.

This five-year full-time programme at the University of Aberdeen includes a year abroad, and the subsea specialisation reflects the university's location in one of Europe's most significant offshore energy regions. Aberdeen has been at the heart of the North Sea oil and gas industry for decades, and the university's engineering programmes benefit directly from that connection, through research collaborations, industry links, and a curriculum informed by real offshore engineering challenges. You will study the core mechanical engineering curriculum alongside specialist content in subsea systems, offshore structures, pipeline engineering, and the environmental and operational challenges of deep-water engineering.

Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in the offshore energy industry, including oil and gas, offshore wind, and subsea systems, as well as in naval architecture, marine engineering, defence, and infrastructure. Professional registration as a chartered mechanical engineer is available through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
