About this course

Mechanical engineering provides the analytical and design tools needed to understand, create and maintain the physical systems that make modern life possible, from transport and energy infrastructure to manufacturing equipment, medical devices and everyday products. At the University of Lincoln, this four-year full-time degree includes a science foundation year and a sandwich placement with work placement, and it was founded in collaboration with Siemens, giving the programme from its outset a strong connection to professional engineering practice and a commitment to preparing graduates who are both technically skilled and able to adapt to the changing demands of the engineering world.

You will study the core mechanical engineering disciplines: statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing processes, design and control systems. The science foundation year develops your mathematical and physical science foundations before you engage with the full engineering curriculum, making the programme accessible to students who need to build on their pre-entry qualifications. The sandwich placement gives you professional experience in an engineering company, testing your skills in a real working environment and building the professional relationships that support career entry.

Lincoln's engineering school emphasises research-led teaching and the development of sustainable engineering thinking. A typical tariff of around 72 points is expected for the foundation year entry route.

Mechanical engineering graduates work across aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, construction, medical technology and defence. Career routes include design engineering, project engineering, manufacturing engineering and technical consultancy, and the profession offers established pathways to chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study to develop specialist expertise or to satisfy the academic requirements for chartership.
