About this course

Mechanical engineering with renewables is a degree that combines the core disciplines of mechanical engineering with a specialist focus on the renewable energy sector, one of the fastest-growing and most strategically important areas of engineering practice. Mechanical engineering provides the fundamental knowledge of materials, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, manufacturing, and control systems that underpin the design and operation of physical systems. The renewables specialisation focuses on the specific engineering challenges of generating, storing, and distributing energy from wind, solar, tidal, and other renewable sources, asking how machines and systems can be designed to harness these resources efficiently, reliably, and sustainably.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme aims to develop your knowledge, design, IT, practical, and soft skills so you can graduate world-ready and become a leader in a broad range of mechanical engineering industries, specialising in the renewables field. You will develop your mathematics, physics, and computational skills to design and create new innovative engineering systems, including machines and systems that incorporate sustainability and renewable energy solutions. You will learn to become a problem solver capable of playing a key role in addressing global challenges.

A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you an international perspective on renewable energy engineering.

With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme that prepares graduates for careers in wind, tidal, and solar energy engineering, offshore engineering, sustainable engineering consultancy, automotive and transport engineering, energy systems design, and manufacturing across the renewables, oil and gas, and advanced engineering sectors. Professional development toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the standard career pathway. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in energy engineering, environmental systems, or advanced mechanical engineering.
