About this course

Mechanical engineering with manufacturing addresses both the design of systems and machines and the processes by which those designs are realised at scale. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the application of physics and materials science to the creation of devices that move, generate power, process materials, or perform useful work. Manufacturing engineering focuses on the processes, systems, and technologies through which products are made reliably, efficiently, and to the required quality.

At the University of Nottingham, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which builds the mathematical and physical foundations needed for engineering study at degree level, making it accessible to students entering from a wide range of backgrounds. From there you will study the fundamental principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, and manufacturing processes, alongside design, computer-aided engineering, and the systems-level thinking that modern engineering demands. The manufacturing strand develops your understanding of machining, forming, joining, additive manufacturing, quality control, and production planning, giving you the ability to think not just about what to design but how to make it.

The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, ensuring that you have substantial professional experience in engineering practice before you graduate. All candidates are considered individually, and the typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates from mechanical engineering with manufacturing programmes go on to careers in design engineering, manufacturing engineering, product development, project management, and technical consulting across automotive, aerospace, energy, consumer goods, and defence. Further study options include master's degrees in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and related specialisms, as well as routes toward chartered engineer status.
