About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, and manufacture of systems and devices that use mechanical forces and movement. From engines, turbines, and industrial machinery to medical devices, robotics, and the structural components of vehicles and aircraft, the work of mechanical engineers touches almost every area of modern industry. The discipline draws on mathematics, physics, materials science, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, combining analytical rigour with creative problem-solving and practical design skill.

Nottingham Trent University's four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, making the programme accessible to students who need to build their mathematical and scientific foundations before entering the main engineering curriculum. The foundation year provides structured support to bring you to the level required for the demanding content that follows, and the four-year format allows for thorough development of both theoretical knowledge and practical engineering competence. You will study mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, manufacturing processes, design, control systems, and computational engineering tools, developing the ability to analyse complex systems, design components, and solve engineering problems with confidence.
