About this course

Mechanical engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, analysis and manufacture of mechanical systems, from individual components and machines to large-scale engineering infrastructure. It applies mathematics, physics and materials science to a vast range of practical challenges, and mechanical engineers are employed across virtually every sector where engineered systems are built and maintained. The ability to understand how things work, to model and test design solutions, and to bring creative thinking to technical problems is at the heart of what the discipline develops.

At Birmingham City University, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, which is designed for students who have the aptitude and motivation for engineering but need additional preparation in mathematics, physics and academic skills before entering degree-level study. From the foundation year you progress into the BEng in Mechanical Engineering, which offers two specialist pathways: applied Automotive and applied Manufacturing. These pathways allow you to develop focused expertise in areas of direct relevance to two of the UK's most significant engineering sectors.

You will study the core mechanical engineering disciplines, including thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, materials, dynamics and control, alongside design and professional engineering practice, with your chosen pathway adding specialist depth and direct relevance to industry.

Practical and project-based work runs throughout the degree, connecting theoretical knowledge to real engineering contexts. You will develop your design skills, your ability to use engineering analysis tools and software, and the professional judgement and communication skills that working engineers need.

Graduates from mechanical engineering programmes at BCU move into automotive engineering, manufacturing, product design and development, energy, aerospace, defence, consultancy, and the broader engineering sector. Many pursue Chartered Engineer status through the relevant professional engineering body, and further study at master's level is an option for those who want to develop deeper specialist expertise.
