About this course

Mechanical engineering with aeronautics is a degree that bridges two engineering disciplines which have always been closely connected and which are now converging more rapidly than ever. Mechanical engineering provides the foundational sciences: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, materials, dynamics, and design. Aeronautics adds the specific demands of flight: aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft structures, avionics integration, and the engineering of systems that must operate reliably in the most demanding physical environments on earth.

At the University of Glasgow you will study across four years on a full-time programme, with a year abroad that extends your engineering education to an international academic or industrial context. Glasgow's engineering faculty is research-active in both mechanical and aerospace engineering, and the degree is designed to give graduates the cross-disciplinary background needed to work at the boundary of these fields. You will build from the core engineering sciences shared between the two disciplines before specialising in aeronautical content, studying aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion systems, and aircraft structures alongside advanced mechanical engineering topics.

Design projects and laboratory work run throughout, developing your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to engineering challenges in both disciplines. The year abroad gives you exposure to different approaches to engineering education and research.

Graduates of mechanical engineering with aeronautics are in demand across the aerospace and defence sectors, and their cross-disciplinary training also equips them for the broader engineering economy. Roles in aircraft design and development, propulsion engineering, structural analysis, systems integration, and aerospace project management are all common directions.
