About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most versatile engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems. From turbines and engines to robots and biomedical devices, mechanical engineers work on the machines and systems that generate power, move people and goods, manufacture products and support life. The discipline combines rigorous training in mathematics, physics and materials science with the creative and practical skills to design solutions that work in the real world.

At the University of Nottingham, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The foundation year provides the mathematical and scientific preparation needed before you progress to the full degree. The sandwich and placement elements give you substantial professional experience in engineering organisations, developing practical competence, commercial awareness and professional identity before you graduate.

The year abroad adds an international dimension, exposing you to engineering practice and research in a different national context.

You will study mechanics and dynamics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing, machine design, computer-aided design and analysis, control systems and engineering mathematics. Design projects, laboratory work and practical challenges are central to how you develop as an engineer, building your ability to apply theory to real problems and communicate technical solutions clearly.

Graduates go on to careers in aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, robotics, biomedical devices, construction, defence and consulting. Mechanical engineering graduates are among the most sought-after in engineering, and many pursue chartered engineer status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Postgraduate study in mechanical, automotive, aerospace or energy engineering is available for those who want to specialise further.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if …
