About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis and manufacture of systems that involve motion, forces and energy. It encompasses everything from the design of individual components and mechanisms to the engineering of complex systems including vehicles, turbines, robotic systems, medical devices and manufacturing processes. Mechanical engineers apply principles of physics, materials science, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and computational modelling to create solutions that are efficient, safe and fit for purpose.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time BEng programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international dimension to your engineering education. You will develop your mathematical, physics and computational skills as the foundation for engineering design and analysis, working across core areas including statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science and manufacturing processes. The programme places a strong emphasis on developing you as a problem solver, equipping you to engage with the global engineering challenges, including sustainability, climate change and infrastructure development, that define the field today.

The year abroad provides an opportunity to experience engineering education and culture in a different national context, broadening your perspective and professional network.

With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a demanding programme at a well-regarded Scottish university. Mechanical engineering graduates work across an extraordinarily wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, defence, manufacturing, biomedical devices, oil and gas, rail and construction. Many pursue professional registration with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or the Engineering Council.

Postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level is a common pathway for those who want to specialise or pursue research, and the broad foundation of a mechanical engineering degree makes it one of the most transferable qualifications in engineering.

Highly recommend
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to vis…

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” th…
