About this course

Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest and most fundamental engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems across virtually every sector of the economy. It draws on mathematics, physics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science and manufacturing to tackle problems that range from miniature biomedical devices to large-scale power generation systems. Mechanical engineers are central to the development of sustainable technologies, from renewable energy systems and electric vehicles to lightweight materials and efficient manufacturing processes.

At Queen's University Belfast this five-year full-time programme leads to an integrated Masters degree, with a sandwich year built into the structure to give you substantial professional experience in an engineering environment during your degree. The sandwich year allows you to apply academic knowledge in real engineering contexts and return to your final years of study with practical insight that deepens your technical understanding. You will develop a broad range of technical, personal and professional skills across the programme, from design and analysis through to project management and communication, preparing you for entry to professional engineering practice.

Graduates from Mechanical Engineering with an integrated Masters go on to careers across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, manufacturing, marine, oil and gas, medical devices and robotics. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or related professional bodies, which requires relevant professional experience alongside the academic qualification.
