About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the foundational disciplines of the modern world, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of physical systems, from microcomponents to large-scale industrial plant. It draws on mathematics, physics, materials science, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to solve problems that range from the everyday to the highly complex. Mechanical engineers work across virtually every sector of industry, and the skills developed in the degree are among the most transferable in engineering.

At Surrey, this three-year degree prepares you to solve real-world problems in areas including automation, fluid mechanics, robotics, and sustainability. You will develop a strong foundation in the core engineering sciences, including mechanics and structures, thermodynamics, materials behaviour, and control systems, and will apply this knowledge through design projects and laboratory work that reflect the challenges engineers face in practice. Computing and design are integral to the curriculum, giving you the digital and modelling skills that are essential in contemporary engineering.
