About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most enduring of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of systems that involve motion, force, and energy. From the turbines that generate electricity to the vehicles people travel in, from medical devices to aerospace components, the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and materials science underpin an enormous range of technologies that modern life depends on. Studying mechanical engineering means developing the analytical rigour to solve genuinely complex problems and the practical creativity to turn solutions into real designs.

At the University of Bath, you will explore the core pillars of the discipline over three years of full-time study. You will build a thorough grounding in engineering mathematics and computational methods, then apply these to courses in solid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
