About this course

Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering discipline, concerned with designing, analysing, manufacturing and maintaining systems and devices that involve forces, motion, energy and materials. It sits behind a vast range of human activities, from the turbines that generate electricity and the engines that power transport to the mechanisms of medical devices and the thermal management systems inside computers. Mechanical engineers must combine deep analytical knowledge with creativity and practical judgement, and the degree develops all of these.

At Swansea University, the three-year full-time BEng programme is built on the belief that hands-on experience is as important as theoretical understanding. You will study engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, manufacturing processes, control systems and engineering design, developing the quantitative and analytical skills that professional engineering requires alongside the practical capabilities that distinguish the best engineers from the rest. Laboratory work, design projects and the experience of working in teams on engineering challenges are woven through the programme.

Swansea's engineering department has strong industry connections, and the coastal city provides an interesting engineering context, with proximity to the manufacturing industries of south Wales and the energy sector.

Graduates of mechanical engineering work in aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, medical devices, marine engineering, consultancy and the public sector. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Postgraduate study in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, robotics, energy systems or materials science is a natural next step for those who want to specialise further or move into research.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student cit…

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good tr…
