About this course

Mechanical engineering is a discipline that applies scientific principles to the design, analysis and manufacture of mechanical systems, from precision components to complex machines, vehicles and power-generating infrastructure. It encompasses thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, materials science, manufacturing processes, dynamics and control, and mechanical engineers work across almost every industry that involves making things, moving things or converting energy. It is a profession that demands both rigorous technical understanding and the practical ability to turn that understanding into real engineered solutions.

This three-year full-time degree at Brunel University London includes a foundation year that develops the mathematical and physical science grounding needed to progress to degree-level engineering. The degree has access to state-of-the-art teaching facilities including flight simulators, and you have the opportunity to join the Brunel Motorsport team and compete in events such as the Formula Student and Isle of Man TT competitions, which provide real engineering design, manufacturing and team management experience alongside your academic study. The programme develops strong theoretical and practical foundations across the core areas of mechanical engineering, preparing you for the full breadth of engineering careers that the discipline opens up.

Mechanical engineering graduates work across manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy, defence, healthcare technology, marine and rail, among many other sectors. Roles in design engineering, product development, systems engineering, production, maintenance and project management are all relevant destinations. Professional chartership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the standard professional qualification for the field.

Further study at postgraduate level in specialist areas of mechanical engineering is an option for those pursuing advanced technical or research careers.

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good trans…

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good tra…
