About this course

Mathematics with mathematical computation is a combination at Imperial College London that reflects the increasingly computational character of modern mathematics. Pure mathematics is the discipline of proof, abstraction, and rigorous logical reasoning, exploring the structures of number, space, and logic that underlie the physical world and much of our information technology. Mathematical computation addresses the algorithms, numerical methods, and computational techniques through which mathematical problems are solved in practice, including problems that are too complex to resolve analytically.

At Imperial College, this three-year full-time programme gives you the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of mathematical theory and application, with opportunities to deepen your knowledge in areas that appeal to you as your studies progress. You will study analysis, algebra, differential equations, probability, and statistics alongside programming, algorithms, numerical analysis, and machine learning. The mathematical culture at Imperial is research-led and demanding, and you will develop the capacity for precise, abstract mathematical thinking alongside strong computational skills.

The combination is particularly valuable for careers in quantitative finance, data science, operations research, and scientific computing, as well as in mathematical research itself. The typical entry tariff is 216 UCAS points.

Graduates from mathematics with mathematical computation programmes are among the most sought after in the graduate market. Careers in finance, data science, machine learning research, software engineering, scientific computing, and academia are all common destinations. The level of mathematical rigour that an Imperial degree develops opens doors across virtually every quantitative field.

Further study at postgraduate level in mathematics, statistics, machine learning, or quantitative finance is available for those who wish to pursue specialist careers or academic research.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of…

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share…
