About this course

Mathematics is the science of pattern, structure, and logical necessity. It provides the language in which the natural sciences are written, the tools on which engineering, computing, and finance depend, and a discipline of pure thought whose beauty and rigour attract students who may never use their results directly but who are transformed by the habits of mind they develop. At its best, a mathematics degree teaches you not just a body of knowledge but a way of thinking: precise, creative, and intolerant of hand-waving.

At the University of Exeter you will study across four years on a full-time programme that includes a period of international study, reflecting the global nature of mathematics as a discipline and giving you an academic experience beyond UK shores. The curriculum moves from foundational real and complex analysis, algebra, and calculus through to advanced pure and applied mathematics, with the option to engage with topics in statistics, mathematical modelling, and numerical methods as your studies develop.
