About this course

Mathematics with data science is a degree that develops the mathematical foundations of quantitative thinking alongside the specific computational and statistical tools used to extract understanding from data. Data science is not simply a technical skill set; at its core it is applied mathematics, and the mathematical depth that this degree provides gives you a more robust and adaptable competence than programmes that focus primarily on software tools without developing the underlying theory. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time programme grounds you in the core mathematics of equations, calculus, linear algebra and classical dynamics before introducing you to the probability, statistics, optimisation and machine learning methods that data science draws upon.

You will develop your mathematical understanding through rigorous analysis alongside the computational skills needed to work with real data at scale. Optional modules allow you to explore further in directions including quantum mechanics, the mathematics of weather and climate, or more advanced statistics and machine learning, giving you the flexibility to pursue the areas most relevant to your interests and career ambitions.
