About this course

Mathematics with Computer Science is a degree that combines the rigorous logical foundations of mathematics with the practical and theoretical tools of computing, producing graduates who can think abstractly and implement solutions efficiently. Mathematics provides the language and proof techniques that underlie computer science, from algorithm analysis and combinatorics to probability and linear algebra. Computer science applies and extends those foundations to the design of software, the architecture of systems, and the solution of computational problems across every domain of modern life.

At the University of Reading, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will develop strong skills in analysis, discrete mathematics, numerical methods, and statistics alongside core areas of computer science including programming, algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, and software engineering. The programme meets the requirements for the Chartered Mathematician designation awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications when combined with subsequent professional development, reflecting the quality and rigour of the mathematical training it provides.

The sandwich year and placements give you substantial professional experience in computing, data science, or a related field, connecting your academic development to real industry practice.

Graduates of Mathematics with Computer Science find careers in software development, data science, financial modelling, machine learning, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and academic research. The combination of mathematical depth and computing skill is particularly valued in industries that require the ability to model complex systems, analyse large datasets, or build reliable software at scale. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, computer science, or data science, and others go directly into technology, finance, or engineering roles where the joint background is a significant advantage.
