About this course

Actuarial science applies mathematics, statistics, and probability to the assessment and management of financial risk. Actuaries are the professionals who quantify the financial implications of uncertain future events, whether for pension funds working out how much needs to be set aside today to meet future liabilities, insurance companies pricing the risk of claims, or investment institutions managing the uncertainty of market returns. The discipline requires exceptional mathematical ability, but also the judgement to communicate technical findings clearly to clients and decision-makers who may not share that mathematical background.

At Southampton this three-year full-time programme combines the rigour of a mathematics degree with the specialist skills needed for actuarial practice. You will develop a strong grounding in pure and applied mathematics alongside the probability and statistics that are central to actuarial modelling. The actuarial science component introduces you to the specific techniques used to model and price risk in life insurance, general insurance, pensions, and investment, developing the ability to build models, run simulations, and interpret results in real financial contexts.

Southampton's mathematics department is strong in both pure and applied directions, providing a challenging academic environment for this demanding programme.

Graduates are well placed to pursue the professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the professional body for actuaries in the UK, with the degree providing significant exemptions from early professional examination papers. Careers in pensions, insurance, investment banking, reinsurance, and financial consultancy are the most direct destinations. The quantitative and analytical skills developed through the degree are also highly valued in data science, finance, risk management, and technology roles, making this one of the most versatile STEM qualifications available.
