About this course

Mathematics is the discipline of pure logical reasoning applied to abstract structures, concerned with number, space, pattern and change, and its methods range from rigorous proof in pure mathematics to the quantitative modelling that underpins physics, engineering, economics and the natural sciences. What unites these varied applications is a shared commitment to precision, to the identification of underlying structure, and to the disciplined development of argument from first principles. Studying mathematics at degree level transforms the way you think about problems, and the skills it develops are among the most versatile in higher education.

This four-year programme at Loughborough University begins with a foundation year designed for students who have not yet studied the prerequisite subjects for direct entry, who have encountered adverse circumstances, who have had previous sporting commitments that affected their academic preparation, or who are returning to education as mature students or care leavers. The foundation year builds the mathematical knowledge and academic skills needed to succeed on the main degree, giving you a supported pathway into rigorous university-level mathematics.

From the foundation year you will progress into the full degree, developing fluency across the core areas of pure and applied mathematics. You will encounter calculus, algebra, statistics, mathematical analysis, numerical methods and mathematical modelling, building both the technical facility and the conceptual understanding that define mathematical thinking. Throughout the programme you will learn to construct proofs, work with abstract ideas and apply mathematical tools to problems that extend beyond pure theory.

Mathematics graduates are among the most sought-after in the labour market. Careers span finance, actuarial work, data science, software engineering, operations research, statistics, teaching, the civil service, and management consulting. The rigorous training in logic and quantitative reasoning is valued wherever complex problems need to be broken down and solved systematically.

Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, finance, computing or physics is also a natural continuation for those who wish to go deeper into the subject.
