About this course

Mathematics is the language in which the universe is written, as Galileo famously observed, and it remains the foundation on which science, technology, economics, engineering and data science all rest. Studying mathematics at university is not simply about learning more techniques; it is about developing the capacity for rigorous logical reasoning, abstract thinking and precise problem-solving that defines the discipline. A mathematics degree trains you to see structure in complexity, to construct proofs, to build and evaluate models of real-world phenomena, and to communicate your reasoning clearly and convincingly.

At the University of Chester, this three-year full-time BSc draws on a long tradition of mathematics teaching and a strong reputation within the UK mathematics community. You will study pure mathematics, including analysis, algebra and number theory, alongside applied mathematics and statistics, developing both the theoretical foundations and the practical mathematical tools that employers in many sectors need. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to work in a relevant professional role for an extended period before your final year.

A year abroad is also available, and work placement is built into the degree, supporting your development as a well-rounded graduate mathematician.
