About this course

Mathematics is the discipline concerned with abstract structure, pattern, and proof, developing a language of extraordinary precision and generality that describes relationships and quantities across every domain of human knowledge. Pure mathematics seeks to understand mathematical structures for their own sake, building rigorous proofs of theorems that reveal deep truths about number, space, and infinity. Applied mathematics uses those structures to model and solve problems in physics, engineering, economics, biology, and computer science.

A mathematics degree develops logical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and the ability to abstract and generalise, which are among the most transferable intellectual skills available.

At the University of Reading, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, offering a remarkably comprehensive set of structural features. The foundation year builds the mathematical preparation you need before progressing into the main degree. The sandwich year and placement opportunities give you extended professional experience in a mathematically intensive role, while the year abroad allows you to study mathematics in another country and to experience different mathematical traditions and research cultures.

You will cover analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, differential equations, and numerical methods, developing both theoretical depth and computational ability. A typical entry tariff of 120 points, combined with the foundation year, makes the programme accessible.

Mathematics graduates are among the most employable science graduates, with strong demand from finance, data science, technology, engineering, consulting, government statistical agencies, and research. The combination of placement experience and year abroad is a significant professional advantage. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in mathematics or a mathematically intensive field, and Reading's research culture in areas including meteorology, data science, and applied mathematics provides good postgraduate opportunities.

Teaching mathematics in secondary schools is also a well-trodden and rewarding path.
